Unlockables

Get ready folks, cause this game contains a LOT of unlockable stuff.

Unlockable Stages

Brinstar Depths

To unlock Brinstar Depths from Planet Zebes, play and finish 50 VS. Mode matches. You can view how much matches you've played in the Melee Records in the Data menu.

Fourside

To unlock Fourside from Eagleland, play 100 VS. Mode matches.Again, check the Melee Records to see how many matches you have played and finished.(More details above)

Big Blue

To unlock Big Blue from the F-Zero Grand Prix, play 150 VS. Mode matches.Check the Melee records for how many matches you've done.

Poke Floats

To unlock Poke Floats from Kanto Skies, play 200 VS. Mode matches.Check the Melee Records for how much matches you've played.
Poke Floats is from the Pokemon series, although it is not based off of any specific location. It could be inspired by the Macy's Thanksgiving Parades held every year.

Mushroom Kingdom 2

To unlock the Mushroom Kingdom 2 stage, you must obtain the Birdo trophy. You can obtain the trophy by either in the Lottery game or found in Classic or Adventure 1P modes.
The stage is a sequel to the already-unlocked Mushroom Kingdom stage, and is instead based off the first level of Super Mario Bros.2(USA version)

Flat Zone

To unlock the Flat Zone in Superflat World, complete either 1 Player Classic,Adventure,or All Star Mode(see below on how to unlock All-Star Mode) with Mr.Game and Watch on any difficulty, but you must not use a continue on the Continue screen. For how to unlock Mr.Game and Watch, see instructions below the unlockable characters section.
The Flat Zone is from the long line of Game and Watch games, like Helmet,Oil Panic,Manhole, and more.It combines many attributes from the portable games, and the stage is even shaped like an old Game and Watch console.

Battlefield

To unlock Battlefield, complete All-Star Mode in 1P Mode with any character on any difficulty. To get All-Star Mode, unlock all 11 of the unlockable characters.(Luigi,Falco,Dr.Mario,Ganondorf,Jigglypuff,Marth,Mewtwo,Roy,Pichu,Mr.Game and Watch, and Young Link)
Battlefield is a simple flat stage that isn't based off of any game or series. It contains no hazards, and is where you fight in Multi-Man Melee. It is also where you fight in tournament mode.It is a popular stage among SSB players who don't prefer stage hazards, items,or any other 'annoyances'. (That and Final Destination)

Final Destination

To unlock Final Destination, finish Event 51 'The Showdown' in 1P Event Mode.To unlock the 51st Event, you must complete every event before it,(all 50 event matches) and unlock all unlockable characters.
Final Destination is the hardest stage to unlock, but is very suitable for beginner or inexperienced players,as it features no hazards or other platforms.Like Battlefield,it is a popular stage among advanced players who don't want hazards, items,or any other 'annoyances'.Again, this stage is from no specific game or series.

N64 Dream Land

To unlock this classic stage from Super Smash Bros.(game) on the N64,finish all character's Target Tests in 1P Stadium Mode. You must finish all character's target tests, including unlockable ones, making this quite a challenge.

N64 Kongo Jungle

To unlock this classic stage from SSBN64,clear 15-minute melee with any character from the 1P Multi-Man Melee.Every player will hate this,so we recommend using Donkey Kong's (no coincidence intended) Down-B move.

N64 Yoshi's Story

To unlock this classic stage from SSBN64,hit and throw the Sandbag in Home Run Contest mode from the 1P Mode exactly or over 1,312 Ft.(400m if you're using the Metric units) An easy way to accomplish this is with Yoshi.(again,no coincidences intended) Grab the bat,and jump and do Yoshi's Down and A attack to do much damage.Do this a lot of times and see if you can swing the Sandbag 1,312 Feet.

Unlockable Characters

Unlockable characters have two ways to unlock them.Usually the first way is a crazy and weird one, while the second way is just playing a certain amount of VS. Mode matches. You can view how many matches you've finished in the Melee Records in the Data menu. You don't have to do both ways, just one.Which way do you prefer?
Note: No Contest and Special Mode matches don't add up to your VS. Mode Match records.

Dr.Mario

  • To unlock him, complete Classic or Adventure mode in 1P Mode with Mario without ever using a continue.
  • Another way to unlock him is to play 100 VS.Mode matches.
You'll have to win the battle against Dr.Mario to unlock him.
If you unlocked Jigglypuff, you'll have to do this again to unlock Dr.Mario.
Dr.Mario is a clone of Mario with some extra moves. He is from the Dr.Mario puzzle game series.

Jigglypuff

  • To unlock..it,complete Classic or Adventure mode in 1P mode with any character on any difficulty for the first time.It doesn't matter if you use a continue or not.
  • Play 50 VS. Mode matches.
Jigglypuff is a simple character and is likely the first character you'll unlock in this game.It is from the Pokemon series.

Marth

  • To unlock Marth, play with all 14 initial characters(the non-unlockable one) in VS.Mode matches at least once. OR beat Classic or Adventure mode in 1P mode with all 14 initial characters.(We recommend the first option,it's way easier and faster)
  • Play and finish 400 VS. Mode matches.
Marth is from the (at the time) Japan-only Fire Emblem series. His taunts and sounds are all untranslated in Japanese.

Roy

  • To unlock Roy,beat Adventure or Classic mode as Marth on any difficulty.
  • Play 901 VS. Mode Matches.
Roy is a clone of Marth with slight advantages and disadvantages. He is also from the Fire Emblem series, and speaks Japanese. He is said to be the reason of all the next Fire Emblem games to be released in Japan and North America.

Mr.Game and Watch

  • Complete Classic or Adventure mode with all 24 characters(including unlockable ones) or finish all 24 character's Target Tests.
  • Play 1,000 VS.Mode matches.
Mr.Game and Watch is considered to be the final unlockable character, sense you need all the other unlockable characters to unlock him. When you get him,you can easily get the Flat Zone stage.(details on the top) Mr.Game and Watch has many powerful attacks, and is from the long line of Game and Watch titles and portable consoles.

Falco

  • Finish 100 Multi-Man Melee with any character.(we recommend Donkey Kong or Captain Falcon)
  • Play 300 VS.Mode matches.
Falco is a clone of Fox,with slight differences in moves. He is from the Star Fox series.

Young Link

  • Complete Classic or Adventure Mode with ten different characters.
  • Play 500 VS.Mode matches.
It was believed that you had to complete Link and Zelda/Sheik as one of the ten characters, but this is not true.Young Link is a clone of Link, and is faster but weaker thank Link.He is from the Legend of Zelda series, but looks more like he does in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Mewtwo

  • Play a total of 20 hours of VS.Mode,or play a total of 20 hours in 1P Mode.Go to the Melee Records to see the total time you've played in the modes.Time is based off the time in battles, not in menus. As an easier solution, you can have four players battle out for 5 hours.Another easier way is to have a VS. match with a time of 99.Play on Infinite Glacier:Icicle Mountain stage.Leave the game on until the match is over, and fight Mewtwo.
  • Play 700 VS.Mode matches.
Mewtwo is the hardest character to unlock in the game, probably even more so then Mr.Game and Watch. It's all worth it though, because Mewtwo is considered number one in many top tier lists. It's a hard character for beginner or intermediate players, but is a popular character of choice for experienced and advanced players. Mewtwo isn't a clone of any character in the game.It is from the Pokemon series.

Pichu

  • Finish Event Match 37 'Legendary Pokemon'.To reach this event, you'll have to complete all 30 of the other matches, which you'll also have to reach by unlocking Jigglypuff,Falco,Young Link, and Luigi.
  • Play 200 VS.Mode matches.
Pichu is the weakest player in the game, and is usually on the bottom of top tier lists. It is a clone of Pikachu, but it's lightning bolts are weaker and it's body is smaller. It is from the Pokemon series.

Ganondorf

  • Finish Event Match 29 'Triforce Gathering',where you fight Ganondorf. After you win the event, you will battle Ganondorf again.
  • Play 600 VS.Mode matches.
Ganondorf is a clone of Captain Falcon, but incredibly slower but still powerful. He is from the Legend of Zelda series, but looks more like his Ocarina of Time form.

Luigi

  • Play as any character in Adventure Mode on any difficulty.Finish the first stage,Mushroom Kingdom,on any time limit that has a 2.For example, when you cross the finish line at the end of Mushroom Kingdom stage, you must have a 2 in the time, like 3:32:29 or 2:45:35.If you did it right,a cutscene will play where Luigi replaces Mario.Instead of fighting Mario and Peach, you'll fight Luigi and Peach.Beat Luigi and Peach under a minute and continue playing Adventure Mode without using a continue. When you finish Adventure Mode with your character, you'll fight Luigi and if you win, you'll unlock him as a character.
  • Play 800 VS.Mode matches.
Luigi is a clone of Mario, but he is faster and even has better advantages in his attacks.Melee players often call him the most fun to play as.He is from the Super Mario series.

Unlockable Modes

All Star Mode

To unlock All-Star Mode, unlock all 25 characters.(including the unlockable characters described up top) All Star Mode will be available in the 1 Player menu. All Star Mode is where you fight all the characters of the game in one life.Along the way,you have the option to use health items that will decrease your percentage.Characters you fight are in the order of which they appeared.Like Classic and Adventure Mode, you get trophies when you finish the mode with a character. The trophies are just alternate costumes of the characters.

Other Unlockables

Score Display

When playing a score-based match in VS.Mode, your score will only be shown in the results screen. When you unlock Score Display, however, your score will be shown in-game.To unlock this, play and finish 5000 VS.Mode matches. You can see how many matches you've made in the Melee Records.

Sound Test

To unlock the Sound Test, have all 29 of the stages, beat all 51 events,(you have to beat event matches 1-50 to unlock event match 51 'The Showdown') and unlock all the unlockable characters. This also gives you the Marin trophy,a character from Legend of Zelda:Link's Awakening.Go back to the start of the game or reset the console to access the Sound Test.
The Sound Test is where you can play music and sounds from the game. After you unlock the Sound Test, you can play the music in the Gallery mode.(the gallery can only be access if you have pictures taken in Special Mode on your memory card)
You can also play alternate music for some stages but holding L and R after you unlock the Sound Test. All players that aren't CPU have to hold L and R together.

Mew (From Pokeball item)

To unlock Mew,unlock all the characters above. This only means Mew will actually spawn from a Pokeball, but it does not mean it will appear right away.
Mew is a rare Pokemon that has a 1/251 chance of spawning from a thrown Pokeball in the game. Metwto,a playable character and unlockable in this game,is the half-clone of Mew.(however,Mew is not playable in any way)
When Mew spawns, he does not attack any players and appears in a bubble. It flies off after some time. The first time Mew appears, they will get a milestone message saying it was the first time the player saw Mew.Mew is a legendary Pokemon from the Pokemon series.
Mew and Celebi have a 2/251 chance of spawning from a Pokeball in Event Match 37 'Legendary Pokemon.

Mew Trophy

There is also a trophy of Mew available in this game which you can unlock by beating All-Star Mode(how to unlock instructions above) as any character but on difficulty Hard or Very Hard. This trophy will still be unlocked even if you used continue(s),but you will not get it if you lost a game as your character in Hard or Very Hard.

Celebi (From Pokeball item)

In order for Celebi to spawn from a thrown Pokeball in the game, you must unlock it first.Celebi is the hardest Pokemon to unlock, even harder than Mew! You must unlock all secret playable characters, unlock all stages, all Event Matches have to be beaten once, the Sound Test has been unlocked, and unlock the Score Display option.Once it's done,Celebi has a 1/251 chance of spawning from a Pokeball, the exact same chance as Mew.Like Mew,when Celebi is summoned,it flies around and off the stage. The player that summons Celebi earns a milestone message saying they summoned Celebi for the first time. The player also earns the Celebi Catcher bonus worth 8,000 points. You also get the Celebi trophy.
Mew and Celebi have a 2/251 chance of spawning from a Pokeball in Event Match 37 'Legendary Pokemon.

Celebi Trophy

To get the Celebi trophy, you must unlock Celebi and spawn Celebi from a thrown Pokeball any time during a match. This is arguably the hardest trophy to get in the game besides ones only unlockable from the Trophy Lottery game.
