On Windows 10, many apps you download from the Microsoft Store will continue to run in the background to take advantage of additional features, such as the ability to download data, update Live Tiles, and show notifications.

Although these features can be useful in a number of scenarios, apps running in the background (even when you didn't start them) can drain battery, waste bandwidth and system resources. Luckily, if keeping apps updated isn't something important for you, Windows 10 ships with settings to control which apps are allowed to operate in the background.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to prevent apps from running in the background.

How to stop background apps using Privacy settings

To disable apps from running in the background wasting system resources, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Privacy.
  3. Click on Background apps.
  4. Under the 'Choose which apps can run in the background' section, turn off the toggle switch for the apps you want to restrict.

Alternatively, under the 'Background Apps' section, you can turn off the Let apps in the background toggle switch to prevent any app from running in the background toggle switch.

Once you've completed the steps, you can still use the apps normally, but when you close them, all the processes will be terminated until you launch the app again.

How to stop background apps using System settings

Alternatively, on laptops and tablets, it's also possible to prevent apps from running in the background enabling the Battery Saver mode.

While the feature will enable automatically as the battery life drops below 20 percent, you can enable the mode manually at any time using these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Battery.
  4. Under the 'Battery saver' section, turn off the Battery saver status until next charge toggle switch.

    Quick Tip: It's also possible to turn on Battery saver by clicking the battery icon in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar and clicking the Battery saver button.

After completing the steps, none of your apps will be allowed to run in the background while the feature is enabled.

These instructions only apply for apps you acquired from the Microsoft store. If you're looking to stop classic applications from using background resources, you need to close the program manually and make sure to stop the program from running at startup.

Kliva is a Strava client app for Windows 10 that helps track your runs. The free app provides access to many of the fitness tracking features of Strava to your Windows 10 PC and Mobile devices.

Strava is an online service that tracks your fitness activities such as running, cycling and cross-training workouts. The Kliva app allows you to record runs and biking events and upload the recordings to the Strava service. You can track distance, speed, elevations and times. You also have the ability to access Strava's social network to chat it up with friends and compare run data with.

Strava has the ability to upload activities from a Garmin, Android or iPhone device and, in basic terms, Kliva turns your Windows 10 Mobile phone into another supported device to upload your activities from. The app lacks the ability to edit your profile, join clubs and other core functions, which would be handy tools to have.

Kliva is a clean and attractive Windows 10 app that allows users to have mobile access to many of Strava's features while on the go. However, some may find it too restrictive as a client app and it may be better to consider Kliva a companion app for Strava.

Adidas Train and Run

Adidas Train and Run is a Windows 10 app that not only tracks your runs, but also serves as a personal fitness trainer by providing hundreds of free training plans. Available for Windows 10 PC and Mobile, Adidas Train and Run is a free app that delivers real-time guidance and premium coaching to help you work out more efficiently and achieve your fitness goals faster.

This Windows 10 app is compatible with the Fit Smart wrist-based heart monitor or it can be used as a standalone fitness app. Adidas Train and Run can track your heart rate (via the Fit Smart), pace, speed, routes and calories. You can view your workout history, heart rate zones and route maps to better track your progress.

The free training plans are designed to help you lose weight, shape and tone muscles, build strength and improve flexibility. You can even track the wear and tear on you running shoes. All in all, Adidas Train and Run is a running app for Windows 10 with plenty of eye appeal and heart pounding workouts. It is easy to see why it has such a popular following.

Runtastic

Runtastic is a feature-rich Windows 10 Mobile app that tracks your runs, cycling, walks and more. The free Windows 10 app maps out your runs and monitors your progress to get the most out of your training. Key features include:

  • Track activities and view your routes using your Windows Phone GPS.
  • Activity tracking records your duration, distance, calories burned, speed, elevation and more.
  • Workouts can be added manually for indoor/non-GPS activities (treadmill sessions, strength training, etc.).
  • Hydration monitor to monitor how much liquid you have lost during an activity and to remind you to drink up as you workout
  • Social Network sharing to allow you to post your activities on Facebook, Twitter or Runtastic.com

As you record activities there is the option to add your mood, the temperature of the day, surface details, personal notes and photographs to better document your workouts. You can even use Runtastic to track the wear of your running shoes. Just keep in mind that some of the features do require an upgrade to the Pro Version ($4.99).

Runtastic is a solid running app for those who spend more time on the track, bike path or hiking trail than in the gym.

Sports Tracker

Sports Tracker is a run-tracking app that has a little mileage on it. Introduced for Windows Phone 8, this running app is available for Windows 10 Mobile and allows you to track and analyze your runs and share the results with your friends.

The app maps out your runs and records your distance, speed, altitude, pace and more. Sports Tracker isn't an overly complicated app for tracking your runs and is an appealing option is you are looking for a Windows 10 running app a little more on the basic side.

Track Runner

Track Runner for Windows 10 Mobile is a free app designed to track your runs, analyze your performance and create adaptive interval training. The free app offers GPS tracking for your runs, support for heart rate monitors and Live Tile support.

Additional features include adaptive interval workouts, running pace training, cadence analysis, and even stride rate and mileage.

Track Runner also has an auto-pause and auto-resume feature, a diary to record general notes about your runs and a boatload of statistical data to track. Add customizable heart rate zones, GPX import and export features and an intuitive and easy to use interface and Track Runner turns out to be a quality and free running app for Windows 10 Mobile.
